Witness of the ice age
While sea sand mainly consists of silicate, beached stones can be of very different composition and appearance. The glaciers of ice age have eroded and displaced stones from all regions of Scandinavia and have dragged them to central Europe.
Quite many kinds of stones
Basalt, granite, shale, flint and many less known types of stone can be found on beaches of the Baltic and – in a smaller amount – on Northsea beaches.
Stones and fossils come in hundreds of different types. Only very few and relatively common stone types are included in the BeachExplorer portal.
